Global Mobility Category (GMC) for U.S. Citizens Working in Canada
The Global Mobility Category (GMC) is designed for LMIA-exempt work permits that bring significant social,
cultural, or economic benefits to Canada.
Common GMC Pathways
- Intra-Company Transfers (ICTs): Transfers of
executives, senior managers, or specialized knowledge workers.
- Reciprocal Employment: Exchange
opportunities where Canadians are employed abroad in return for allowing
foreign workers into Canada.
- Significant Benefit Work Permits: Granted when
the applicant’s presence benefits Canada (e.g., world-class athletes,
cultural performers, or individuals with specialized expertise).
- Youth and International Mobility Programs: Includes
cultural exchange or youth work permits.
Why GMC Matters for U.S. Citizens
- LMIA-exempt → No employer
labour market test.
- Broad range of professional and cultural opportunities.
- Can be stepping-stone to permanent residency if
long-term employment follows.
