Chinese student in Canada from 2015 to 2024.

Over the past decade, the number of Chinese students coming to Canada on study permits has experienced notable fluctuations, influenced by various factors including global events, policy changes, and shifting preferences.

Overview of Trends (2015–2024):

2015-18: Growth Phase

The number of students increased significantly between 2015 and 2018. Starting at 65,860 in 2015, it rose steadily to 84,975 in 2018. This period likely reflects Canada’s growing appeal as an international study destination, supported by quality education, opportunities for post-graduate work permits, and pathways to permanent residency.

2019-2021: Stabilization and Decline

After reaching a peak in 2018, the numbers slightly dipped in 2019 to 84,140. And a sharper decline occurred during 2020 and 2021 (57,700 in 2020 and 55,745 in 2021). This is likely attributable to the global COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted travel and imposed restrictions, significantly impacting international student mobility.

2021-2023: Recovery

Post-pandemic, there was a slow recovery. In 2022, the number fell further to 51,640, but by 2023, it increased to 58,125. The recovery indicates that international mobility began normalizing.

Recent Decline (October 2024):

In 2024, the numbers again dropped to 50,785 (up to October), showing a slight reversal in recovery. This decline may be caused by the recent changes in immigration policy.

Conclusion:

While Canada has been a preferred destination for Chinese students over the past decade, recent policy shifts indicate a potential decline in future numbers. Despite all the recent changes and challenges, Chinese students continue to hold the second-largest position in Canada in terms of study permits issued. This highlights their sustained interest in pursuing world-class education and opportunities in Canada, showcasing the enduring strength of the educational and cultural ties between the two nations. The data, which reflects trends up until October 2024, underscores the resilience of this relationship, reaffirming that Canada remains a favored destination for Chinese students seeking global academic and professional advancement.
