Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

For international students who have completed their studies in Canada, the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is one of the most valuable opportunities. The PGWP is an open work permit, meaning graduates can work for almost any employer in Canada and gain the Canadian work experience often needed for permanent residency.

What is a PGWP?

The Post-Graduation Work Permit allows international graduates from eligible Canadian institutions to work in Canada after completing their program of study. It is considered an open work permit, so there is no need for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), and graduates can work full-time, part-time, or even be self-employed.

Who is Eligible for a PGWP?

To qualify for a PGWP, applicants must:

  • Have completed a full-time program of at least 8 months at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • Apply within 180 days of receiving their final marks or completion letter.
  • Hold valid student status at the time of application.

Note: Not all programs or schools make graduates eligible, so it is important to confirm PGWP eligibility before enrolling.

Validity of the PGWP

The length of the PGWP depends on the duration of the study program:

  • Programs 8 months to less than 2 years: PGWP may be valid for the same length as the program.
  • Programs 2 years or longer: PGWP may be valid for up to 3 years.

This work experience can significantly increase a graduate’s chances of obtaining permanent residency through programs such as the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry.

Why Seek Legal Guidance?

The PGWP application process has strict deadlines and requirements. Submitting incorrect or incomplete applications can result in refusals and loss of status in Canada. Our law firm helps graduates navigate the process smoothly, ensuring their transition from student to worker is successful.
