Decline in Canadian Spousal Sponsorship: What’s Happening?

https://youtu.be/0gxFAhYx1HI?si=dH04bqat3jN_Nlsq Decline in Canadian Spousal Sponsorship: What’sHappening? The opportunity to reunite with loved ones in Canada through spousal sponsorship is becoming increasingly difficult. Recent projections show a concerning decline that could affect thousands of families planning to settle together in Canada. A Significant Drop in Spousal Sponsorship Numbers In the most recent year, Canada welcomed 82,000 spouses through its spousal sponsorship program. However, the numbers are expected to fall dramatically: 2025: 70,000 spouses 2026: 66,500 spouses 2027: 61,000 spouses That’s a total decline of 21,000 spots in just four years. This reduction will likely result in: Longer processing times More complex eligibility requirements A higher likelihood of delays or refusals For families and individuals planning to reunite in Canada, this trend could mean waiting years to be with loved ones. It underscores the importance of submitting a complete and compelling application from the very beginning. Monthly Report: A Comparative Analysis of MPNP EOI Draws – January 2024 vs. January 2025 The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) continues to provide opportunities for skilled workers and international students through its Expression of Interest (EOI) draws. With the latest draws from January 2025 now available, we present a monthly report of January 2025 and a comparative analysis between January 2024 and January 2025, highlighting changes, trends, and insights. Overview of January 2024 Draws In January 2024, MPNP issued 698 Letters of Advice to Apply (LAAs) across three categories: Skilled Worker in Manitoba, Skilled Worker Overseas, and International Education Stream (IES). A total of 490 LAAs were issued and the lowest score to get the LAA was 607. Profiles who have Close relative in Manitoba and completed post-secondary education in Manitoba were considered in the draw.  On the other hand, 72 LAAs were issued to the skilled workers overseas with the lowest score of 639. In terms of International Education Stream (IES), 136 LAAs were Issued. Apart from these nominations, MPNP held a special draw for Ukraine while invited 117 applicants. But this was a special measure which got closed in April 2024. Among the three regular categories, the distribution of LAAs showed a strong emphasis on the Skilled Worker in Manitoba category, which accounted for 70.20% of all invitations, followed by IES with 19.48%, and Skilled Worker Overseas with 10.32%. Overview of January 2025 Draws January 2025 witnessed significant changes in the MPNP draw. Two draws were conducted during the month, issuing a total of 325 LAAs. Notably, no invitations were issued under the International Education Stream (IES), marking a shift from the previous year. Under Skilled Worker in Manitoba, 145 LAAs were Issued with the lowest score of 838. Only the applicant or their spouse who have completed post-secondary education in Manitoba were considered in this draw. In terms of Skilled Worker Overseas, 180 LAAs were Issued with the lowest score of 609. This year, the Skilled Worker Overseas category took the lead, issuing 55.38% of the total LAAs. This represents a significant increase compared to January 2024, where it accounted for only 10.32%. Meanwhile, Skilled Worker in Manitoba invitations dropped to 44.62%, reflecting a notable decrease from its 70.20% share in the previous year. And January 2025 saw no draws based on IES. Increasing Score Requirements: The minimum score requirement for the Skilled Worker in Manitoba category rose significantly, jumping from 607 in January 2024 to 838 in January 2025. This suggests increased competition or a tightening of selection criteria. Interestingly, the lowest score for the Skilled Worker Overseas category decreased slightly from 639 in January 2024 to 609 in January 2025. These trends highlight the dynamic nature of immigration programs and emphasize the importance for applicants to stay updated on changes to maximize their chances of receiving an LAA. As Manitoba continues to adapt its immigration strategies, future draws will undoubtedly offer further insights into the province’s evolving workforce needs.
