Employer-Specific Work Permit for Caregivers in Canada
Canada welcomes international students and recognizes the importance of family unity. To support students and their families, eligible spouses and common-law partners may apply for a Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP). This permit allows them to work for almost any employer in Canada while their partner studies.
What is a Spousal Open Work Permit?
A Spousal Open Work Permit is an LMIA-exempt work permit issued to spouses or common-law partners of international students. It is “open” because it is not tied to a single employer, giving spouses flexibility to gain Canadian work experience and contribute financially during their partner’s studies.
As of March 19, 2024, eligibility has been restricted. Spouses and partners may apply if the international student is:
- Enrolled full-time in a graduate-level program (master’s or doctoral); or
- Studying in a professional degree program such as law, medicine, engineering, dentistry, pharmacy, or other designated fields.
Spouses of students in undergraduate or college-level programs are no longer eligible for this work permit.
