Spousal Sponsorship in Canada

Canada’s Spousal Sponsorship Program is one of the most compassionate immigration pathways, allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to reunite with their loved ones and build a life together in Canada. As part of the Family Class Immigration category, this program underscores Canada’s commitment to family unity and emotional well-being , recognizing that a strong family foundation contributes to a stronger society.

Through this program, eligible sponsors can apply to bring their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to Canada as a permanent resident. The sponsored partner gains access to the same rights and opportunities as other permanent residents, including healthcare, education, and the ability to work and live anywhere in Canada.

Types of Spousal Sponsorship

There are two main types of spousal sponsorship applications under this program:

  • Inland Sponsorship: For couples already living together in Canada, where the sponsored partner holds valid temporary status (visitor, worker, or student).
  • Outland Sponsorship: For spouses or partners living outside Canada, often used when the sponsored person is unable to stay in Canada during
processing or prefers to remain in their home country.

Both pathways aim to reunite couples, but they differ in eligibility, processing times, and work permit options. Inland applicants can apply for an open work permit while waiting for a decision, whereas Outland applicants continue their PR process from abroad.
