Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)
The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence in Canada. This program reflects Canada’s commitment to family reunification, enabling families to live together, share life’s milestones, and support one another in a safe and welcoming environment.
The PGP is highly popular and operates on an annual intake system, with a limited number of applications accepted each year. Due to high demand, the program often uses a lottery-based Invitation to Apply (ITA) system to manage applications, making timely preparation and accurate documentation essential.
Eligibility Requirements
Sponsors and applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Sponsor Requirements:
- Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, at least 18 years old.
- Reside in Canada at the time of sponsorship (proof of residence may be required)
- Meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for the last three tax years to demonstrate financial capacity to support their parents or grandparents without relying on social assistance.
- Commit to financially supporting the sponsored family members for 20 years after they become permanent residents.
- Parent/Grandparent Requirements:
- Must pass medical, criminal, and security checks to qualify for permanent residence.
- Must be admissible to Canada under federal immigration laws.
Application Process
- Express Interest: Potential sponsors submit an Interest to Sponsor form during the open intake period.
- Invitation to Apply (ITA): Sponsors are selected randomly and invited to submit a full application.
- Submit Complete Application: Include financial documents, identity documents, and proof of relationship.
- IRCC Review: Applications are assessed for eligibility, income requirements, and admissibility.
- Permanent Residence Decision: Once approved, parents and grandparents become permanent residents, gaining access to healthcare, education, and social benefits.
Because of high demand and strict income requirements, accurate preparation is critical. At A&M Canadian Immigration Law Corporation, we guide sponsors through eligibility assessment, income documentation, and full application preparation, maximizing the chance of selection and approval.
