Permanent Residency for US Residents
Permanent Residency (PR)
grants non-Canadians the legal right to live, work, and study in Canada
indefinitely. Unlike temporary status, permanent residents access many of the
social benefits available to citizens, including public healthcare and education,
while retaining citizenship in their home country. Over time, PR holders may
apply for Canadian citizenship if they fulfill residency, language, and other
requirements.
Canada aims to welcome approximately 395,000 new permanent residents in 2025, part of its Immigration
Levels Plan. In 2023, Canada admitted 471,808 immigrants, including
economic, family, and refugee classes. More than 40% of projected PR
admissions in 2025 are expected to be from individuals already in Canada
(students or workers). Economic immigration continues to occupy the largest
share of admissions, with upward of 60-62% directed to skilled workers
and entrepreneurs. Canada offers multiple pathways for permanent residence,
catering to diverse backgrounds and goals:
- Economic Class (skilled workers, Express Entry, PNPs,
business/entrepreneur streams)
- Family Class Sponsorship (spouses, children, parents, etc.)
- Refugee
and Humanitarian Programs (resettlement and protection-based pathways)
- Special Pilots & Regional Programs (e.g. Atlantic Immigration Program, Rural &
Northern Immigration Pilot, Agri-Food Pilot)
For U.S. residents seeking
to relocate to Canada, these routes are fully available. Many U.S. citizens or
U.S. residents already working in tech, healthcare, or trade occupations may
qualify under Express Entry or a suitable PNP stream.
