Sponsorship of Dependent Children

Canada’s Dependent Children Sponsorship program under the Family Class allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their biological or adopted children for permanent residence. This pathway ensures that families can stay united, giving children the opportunity to grow, study, and thrive in Canada while living with their parents.

Dependent children can be sponsored whether they are living in Canada or abroad. The program recognizes that children play a central role in family life, and sponsorship helps maintain stability and continuity for the entire family.

Eligibility Requirements

To sponsor dependent children, both the sponsor and the child must meet certain criteria:

Sponsor Requirements:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Must not be under a removal order or in default of previous sponsorships.
  • Agree to financially support the child for the first three years after the child becomes a permanent resident.

Dependent Child Requirements:

  • Must be under 22 years of age and unmarried.
  • Children over 22 may qualify if they are financially dependent due to a physical or mental condition.
  • Biological, adopted, or stepchildren may be sponsored, provided legal guardianship and adoption requirements are satisfied.

Application Process

  1. Prepare the Sponsorship Application: Include identity documents, proof of relationship, and supporting documentation for adoption (if applicable).
  2. Submit Sponsorship & PR Application: Applications can be submitted inside Canada (inland) or outside Canada (outland) depending on the child’s
    location.
  3. IRCC Review: The agency assesses both the sponsor’s eligibility and the child’s admissibility, including background checks, medical exams, and any
    required interviews.
  4. Permanent Residence Approval: Once approved, the child gains permanent resident status and access to healthcare, education, and other social
    benefits in Canada.

This program ensures children remain with their parents and continue to develop in a safe and supportive environment.

At A&M Canadian Immigration Law Corporation, we help families navigate the complex sponsorship process, ensuring accurate documentation, timely submissions, and higher chances of approval, because every child deserves to grow up with their family together.
