Work While You Study – Co-op Student or Intern in Canada
Many
Canadian study programs include a mandatory work experience component, such as
a co-op placement or internship. If your program requires it,
you’ll need a co-op or intern work permit in addition to your study
permit to complete this part of your studies.
Who
Needs a Co-op Work Permit?
You
need this work permit if:
- You have a valid
study permit.
- Your program requires
work experience to graduate.
- You have a letter from
your school confirming all students in your program must complete a work
placement.
- Your co-op or internship makes up 50% or less of your total study program
Who
Is Not Eligible?
You
cannot get a co-op work permit if you are studying:
- English or French as a
second language (ESL/FSL).
- General interest
courses.
- Prerequisite courses for
another study program.
How
to Apply
- If you are applying for
your study permit, you can apply for your co-op work permit at the
same time.
- If you already have a
study permit, you can apply online for a co-op work permit.
- There is no fee for the co-op work permit.
You cannot apply for this permit at a Canadian port of entry; you must apply in advance.
