Graduating from a Canadian institution does not
automatically make a student eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit
(PGWP). Eligibility depends on both the type of institution attended and
the specific program completed. Understanding these requirements before
enrolling is essential for students who intend to work in Canada after
graduation.
The Institution Must Be a PGWP-Eligible DLI
Not every Designated Learning Institution (DLI) offers programs that qualify for a PGWP. While many public colleges and
universities are eligible, some private institutions are not. In certain
provinces, only specific private institutions authorized to grant degrees may
offer PGWP-eligible programs.
Students should confirm not only that the school is a DLI,
but also that it offers PGWP-eligible programs before accepting
admission.
Program Length Requirements
To qualify for a PGWP, the program of study must generally
be at least eight months in length. The duration of the PGWP is usually
based on the length of the completed program:
● Programs between
eight months and less than two years may result in a PGWP matching the program
length.
● Programs of two
years or more may qualify for a PGWP of up to three years.
If a student completes more than one eligible program,
combined duration rules may apply.
Full-Time Study and Academic Standing
Students must typically maintain full-time status during each academic session of the program, with limited exceptions such as
the final term. Failure to maintain status may affect PGWP eligibility.
In addition, students must complete the program requirements
and obtain official confirmation from the institution before applying for the
PGWP.
Field of Study Requirements
Recent regulatory changes have introduced field of study
requirements for certain applicants, particularly graduates of specific
non-degree programs at some institutions. These rules may restrict eligibility
to programs linked to labour market priorities.
Because these requirements can change, it is important to
verify eligibility under current IRCC guidance before applying.
PGWP eligibility is determined by a combination of the
institution, program type, duration, and compliance with study permit
conditions. Before enrolling, students should confirm that both the school and
the specific program qualify. Careful planning at the beginning of a program
can help avoid unexpected immigration consequences after graduation.
PGWP eligibility depends on attending a qualifying
institution and completing an eligible program while maintaining full-time
status. Careful planning ensures that your post-graduation work opportunities
are protected.
