A study permit extension can be refused
when IRCC is not satisfied that the applicant continues to meet the
requirements to remain in Canada as a student, or when required documents are

1. Applying after expiry or losing
student status
If your study permit expires before you
apply, you lose student status. You cannot study until status is restored and a
new permit is issued. Applying late can also create gaps that lead to refusal
if the restoration requirements are not met.
2. Missing or weak proof of
enrollment and academic progression
For extensions, IRCC expects current
evidence that you are actively enrolled and progressing. IRCC requires
uploading the letter of acceptance or, for current students, a letter of
enrolment in the appropriate slot. If your designated learning institution does
not verify the letter by the deadline, IRCC may return the application.
3. Insufficient proof of funds
IRCC assesses whether you have enough money
to continue supporting yourself while studying in Canada. Updated financial
requirements apply to study permit extension applications, and unclear or weak
financial documentation can lead to refusal.
4. Missing PAL or TAL when required
As of January 22, 2025, unless an exception
applies, a new PAL or TAL may be required if you are changing schools or
changing your level of study. Missing this document when required can stop an
extension from moving forward.
5. Passport validity issues
Extensions require a valid passport. If the
passport is expiring soon, IRCC may issue a shorter permit or refuse if
eligibility cannot be confirmed properly through the requested period.
6. Non-compliance with study permit
conditions
If IRCC believes you did not respect conditions of your stay, such as changing key study conditions without proper updates, this can trigger refusal concerns in an extension context.
